Description

Nestled in an enchanting valley, 2 km west of the famous Pont du Gard, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a prestigious arrival for a journey back in time, on a bucolic path that slides along the Gardon to the Castle which overlooks it and which has preserved all the layers of time and the passage of men, religious, warriors, kings or artists.

Built on the site of an ancient Gallo-Roman villa, with some remains of a 12th century fort, successively a priory then an abbey, the Château de Saint Privat played a certain role in the History of France.
In 1629, it was here that Louis XIII and Richelieu signed the pardon of Alès. Its architecture bears witness to the force of time and History and retains traces of significant redevelopment from the 15th to the 18th centuries.

The Estate, which until 1916 included the lands of the Pont du Gard, was acquired that same year by Jacques Rouché, director of the Paris Opera and then of the Réunion des Musées nationaux, who redeveloped the gardens. In 1922, he commissioned his friend Georges Desvallières, one of the founders of the Ateliers d'Art Sacré, to decorate the small chapel, built in the 18th century. The oil paintings on mounted canvas translate the artist's vision of the sacrifice of the war of 14-18.

Protected and classified MH, developing nearly 3,500 m2 of buildings on nearly 410 hectares, Saint-Privat offers a romantic park, an orangery and its nymphaeum, fountains and ponds, a large swimming pool, a chapel, an old silkworm farm, a farm templars, an old mill, moat...
The 1,676 m2 castle includes three rooms decorated with 18th century woodwork: the echo room, the guard room, the peace room, a large dining room, a library, eight bedrooms and various spaces to be arranged as desired.
Created under Louis XIII, the gardens are divided into three distinct parts: the front park, planted with lime trees, mulberry trees and hackberry trees, the so-called romantic park, planted with 300-year-old trees and decorated in its center with the Neptune basin, and the French garden, designed in the great tradition of regular gardens inspired by “water buffets” and Italian rockery.

A truly incredible place to continue writing history, just 30 minutes from Avignon and Nîmes stations.
